Wooded hiking trail at Montgomery Bell State Park

An overnight route requires more than mileage

Montgomery Bell Overnight Trail Planning Guide

Use the official map and operator guidance for the route, camping permission and current access. This page helps you decide whether the trip fits your party before you commit.

An overnight trail changes the consequences of weather, water, navigation and a late start. Confirm the route, campsite or shelter arrangement, registration or reservation requirement, parking and current closures directly with Tennessee State Parks.

Do not treat an old trip report or third-party map as permission. Carry the current official map offline and leave a route plan with someone who is not on the trip.

Pack for the consequence, not the photograph

Bring navigation, light, weather protection, first aid, water capacity and the equipment required by current park rules. Keep the load realistic for the least experienced hiker.

Food storage, fires, waste and campsite behavior must follow current operator guidance. Leave no trace and never disturb historic material.

A day hike is a sound decision

Turning an overnight plan into a day trip is not a failure. When timing, weather, access or group readiness is uncertain, the hiking hub offers a stronger experience with a wider safety margin.
